100 Years of Broadway Musicals: 1890s-1990s
Musical Theater has long been part of the American entertainment world, but really developed into the modern musical around the turn of the last century. Various musical forms reached the stage in New York at the same time: opera, operetta, vaudeville, burlesque, and other forms of theater with music. Between 1900 and 1920, new forms were created and made popular by George M. Cohan and Florenz Ziegfeld, and the form developed steadily through the 1920s and 1930s with works by George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, and the team of Rodgers & Hart. With Oklahoma in 1943, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein created the modern opera and began what has been called The Golden Age of the Broadway Musical. Others who have contributed to the repertoire have included Lerner & Loewe, Leonard Bernstein, Kander & Ebb, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Stephen Sondheim and many others.
