Unearthing Your Story: A Memoir & Personal Essay Workshop for Kids 10-14 In-Person
Join two-time Scholastic Gold Medalist and 2026 YoungArts winner in writing, Claire Yang, for a 5-day workshop focusing on memoir and personal essay writing! In this workshop, students will learn how to unearth their own story through the power of writing to turn a raw memory into a powerful story, focusing both on what to write about and how to write it: how to build a scene from the inside out, how to structure time, how to reflect on the story, and how to develop a unique voice. This program is part of a broader initiative to make writing education (especially creative writing) more accessible for youth. Students will leave with drafts of personal essays and memoirs and a better understanding of their own voice on the page.
Claire is a rising senior attending the Academy for Information Technology and has taught creative writing at summer camps as well as leading Word UP!, an organization helping youth find their voice through writing workshops, mentorships, and competitions. In addition, she is one of Westfield Memorial Library's first two student Library Board members.
